Diana Bobics
“Diána Bóbics is an experimental representative of the post-conceptual generation that emerged around the turn of the millennium. Her diverse oeuvre – with a toolbox spanning sciences and techniques – examines case studies of human experience and pictorial form formation.
Born in Zalaegerszeg, Bóbics graduated from the Faculty of Arts of the Pécs University of Applied Sciences in the 2000s and then from the Akademie der Bildenden Künstler in Munich. The central motif of his conceptually motivated, experimental works is the metaphor of the vulnerable body and the line. His diverse, intermedia oeuvre includes digitally composed music, a sound installation, a drawing depicting human injuries, a black tape intervention that transforms the space of a room, a wax block placed under a magnifying glass, a ceramic vase evoking a retro world, and an origami felt relief constructed from textile cutouts. The main thread of his oeuvre is – in his own words – “the organic reflection of human vulnerability through »plane images« and objects appearing in space, which I embed in the context of various, already existing physical structures, in many cases as spatial drawings.” During the 2010s, the role of abstraction in his art intensified, among other things under the influence of his former master, Sean Scully. In his 2022 painting series titled Divided Pictures, he entered the field of expressive non-figurativity, testifying to energetic, youthful vitality, analyzing the structure-creating power of line. Abstract gestures applied with bright colors, color fields painted over several times, and spray marks reminiscent of graffiti appeared in the picture space divided into several fields. Bóbics lives and creates in Pécs. He works as a lecturer at the Faculty of Arts of the University of Pécs, where he completed his doctoral studies. He regularly participates in solo and group exhibitions in Pécs and in various European cities.
