Adel Makrai
“In my art, people, the world around them, and my own current situation are at the center, and I am primarily motivated by the 21st century challenges and reflections of our modern life regarding the topics - whether personal or in a broader context (e.g.: how can I represent or embrace myself in reality and in the digital space;
I live in a constant duality: my attention is captured by a real moment, but I am much more interested in what lies behind the impressions. Through my vision, the threads of my thoughts set out on a journey to understand the things of the world: the place and relationship of man, as an instinctive being guided by emotions, within the boundaries of material, civilized life, searching for the “Golden Mean”, along which our continuous errors carry our individual journey forward.
The flood of images in our digital culture strongly influences my vision, most of my paintings are figurative and made after photos, which I usually make myself, and in rare cases I lift a motif from the media. I usually start from a single detail that I consider important in terms of the message. Some details of my paintings are elaborated (but partially) in accordance with classical post-visual painting, or they flash in a print-like manner, focusing on the essence, which details are lifted from their original environment: stripped down, they appear on their own or are expanded like a montage with additional details and layers, creating more complex compositions. The initial mood elements are of decisive importance in the creative process: the formulation of the basic background with colors and the gestures of applying material. The specific pictorial elements appear in this space. "I explore the world behind visible reality through the use of transparency, positive-negative forms and light-shadow contrasts."
